Confirmed: Brian Travers (@BTUB40) on The Midsweep
by Phil Coyne on Feb.01, 2010, under RhubarbRadio
Here’s some good news to get your mind away from the rubbish weather and stupidly long commuting times today.
On the 13th February, Brummie of the Year 2009, and Sax-god Snax-god Brian Travers will be coming in to the Rhubarb Radio studio to discuss UB40’s new album ‘Labour Of Love IV, the ongoing discussion about the future of Digbeth as a live music hub and also the astonishingly poor nominations for the Brits 2010.
We’re all pretty excited that Brian has taken the time to come in and talk to us, and we’re now inviting you, the listening public, to send in your questions for him.
Simply leave a comment below or email phil@midsweep.com and we’ll ask Brian the best ones on the 13th. In the meantime, keep it locked to The Midsweep as we confirm more guests over the coming weeks.
Edit: The comments have now been locked to allow us to collate the best questions ahead of Saturday. Remember to tune in from 10am at http://rhubarbradio.com to hear the whole interview and Brian answer your questions.

BT, its now 30 years since the release of UB40’s first single. Is the band thinking of marking both that anniversary plus the long awaited release of LOL IV? If so, is there anything special in the pipeline for the ultra loyal loonies as well as the rest of the general public? – If not…why not!
See I can be serious sometimes x

Since joining the UB40 forum I have made some wonderful lifelong friends.
I have visited Birmingham, a city I would never have thought to visit but for UB40, now I am regular, whether going to see the greatest reggae band in the world or just to get together with my mates for a meal, a few drinks, it’s a great place and sooooo friendly.
I love the fact that all of the taxi drivers are very proud of UB40 and inevitably know of someone, whether it’s a relative, or friend of a friend, who knows Astro or Brian or any of the band members, it gives me a nice warm glow.
UB40 are great ambassadors for Birmingham and Birmingham should be fiercely proud of them.
THANK YOU UB40
Big luv

Hey BT
Just wondered how you have coped been in a successful band for 30 years.
I mean, been away from family while away on world tours and all the pressures you face must drive you to the brink of insanity (well it would me!)
How have you coped all this time!?
Thankyou for such a fabulous tour last year and here’s to many more
Big Love

Hello Brian,
By the time you do this interview, you’ll have got back from the Lima, Peru gig. So what’s the country like? Hope you get the time to take some touristy photos. Did you manage to catch up with any Peruvian Loonies?
Thanks for the music and the time you give to us loonies. Here’s to the worldwide success of LOL4.

Hello Brian
As this week is the 30th anniversary of the release of your very first single I just want to say congratulations to you all and a massive thank you for continuing to make us feel proud to be called fans. February 8th can’t come soon enough!
Now for my question -
You seem to have a brilliant memory. After all these years of meets and greets how can you still remember names and conversations you’ve had with your fans? I want to know what your secret is – I can barely remember what I’ve had for breakfast this morning.
February 3rd, 2010 on 2:30 am
is Dunx really the stig?
February 3rd, 2010 on 6:44 am
Hi Brian!
Maybe you don’t know but as a great lyrics composer you have inspired many South American lovers to keep loving their girls and family. Which is your inspiration when composing loving songs all? Your wife, sons, family members, god? Thanks for making love become an always topic in UB40 songs, and for make peruvians good lovers as well!
February 3rd, 2010 on 8:15 am
yeh yeh bt.hope all is well, firstly id like to pat you on the back for continuing to do what you guys do best making great records and if the samples on amazon are anything to go by then your latest offering is first class. anyways firstly a question…how much fun is it for you and the guys to put a labour of love album together,i mean it must be cool siffting through all of your favourite tunes together and then actually putting together your own versions, good times i bet?. secondly id like to request that you put “your gonna need me” on the bb as it is alovely tune and the words describe wots going on in my life right now,so if you could be so kind id appreciate it,keep up the good work, see you round the bb, take care, BLUECHEESE.

Hey BT…Our sexy sax man!!
As I have said so many times before on the BB or face-to-face with you, RBC & UB40….Thankyou for being a great part of my life and for being not only gentlemen but great friends too! Never ever have you snubbed “The Loonies” when they hang around at the end of the gig…what othedr band would do or does that?? Not many…After meeting you all the 1st time back in October 1983 at the Poole Arts Centre in Poole, Dorset my genuine love for you & the band has developed into a great friendship. Then that wonderful day back in May 2008 at Reflex with the emergence of 2 “new” peeps in UB40 who have gone on to win a place in my heart along with the remaining members of UB40.Words are not enough to express my respect, love & gratitude to you all…Big hugzzz n bouncey luffs …Caryn xx
PS: When IS DunX gonna play the sppons live on stage????

Hi Brian
I Hope you are doing fantastic.
Just poppin’in to say Big Love and Big Thanks to UB40 for the always uplifting reggae vibe you give us.
Discussions about the harm “pirate downloading” is doing to the music industry have been going on on the Board for some time now. You have mentionned the potencial impossibility of earning a living from records.
Can I ask you then if becoming a pro musician is something you would still recomend to talented youngsters nowadays in the light of this challenging situation of the industry?
I hope you Guys have a brilliant time in Peru
Big Love

Hey Bri, as brummie of the year, if you had all the means necessary and money wouldn’t be an object, what would you do or change in Birmingham to make it more popular?
Big knufs, Astrid
February 4th, 2010 on 7:49 pm
Hiya Brian,
Hope you guys have all landed safely in Peru. Still think UB40 are the best “live” band ever and hope to see you all around for many more years to come which leads me into my first question……
“Is RETIREMENT a dirty word to you guys ?? Do you think you’ll carry on for as long as your health and your fans allow ??”
Was soooooooooo nice to meet you after the Liverpool show last December but I was a bit concerned when you told me about Duncan’s new car……so a question for Duncan……
“Now that you are the lead singer with UB40 and the old bank balance is probably looking a bit healthier, do you think you could ditch the bl**dy Skoda and get yourself a REAL motor ??!!!” (hehehehe)
Luvs ya all,
Sally

Hi Sir Brian,
Congrats on 30 years in the music industry, from humble beginings………. a lifetime of musical pleasure, RESPECT.
I know that on your travels you have meet many artists and people, I would like to know aside from me and the other Loonies, LOL, who would you like to meet and put the world to rights?????
February 9th, 2010 on 4:50 pm
Morning Brian,
What is the reason that record releases aren't done simulaneously around the world when a record is released. For example LOL 4 was released yesterday in the UK, ((congrat for that, I hear that it's brilliant,)) but it's not available for us US residents to down load from UK sites or any US sites such as iTunes, so I had to order the cd from the UK and have to wait for the snail mail to deliver it. Is it a logistics/distribution thing or just a copyright issue??
Hugs,
Cruella xx

First thing I do when me little ol sax somes out is yeah, the borin stuff..long notes an scales etc.. then I "play" before anything else the little tune that hooked me all those years ago Adella( easier on Tenor than my Alto LOL the bottom B is a pain innit). When the band are rehearsing as a warm up do have a structured plan or is it more fluid..Jam an see where it takes you kinda thing.. Play some of your tracks or " mess" around with others.
