Emerging Bands: Introducing Love Lost
by CazAshton on Feb.16, 2010, under General
Love Lost are a trio formed in Birmingham. They are composed of twin brothers, Paul and Scott – who cover the bass, singing and drums; with their long-time friend Phil on lead guitar.
Although they formed in 2007 it’s more recently that they’ve started recording their own original music, after initially forming as a favour to a friend to play a covers set at their wedding.
Their influences include Metallica, Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains and this is reflected in their original style.
The three of them work together to create the classic riffs and powerful lyrics you’ll hear, and after years of playing together in other bands, (and two of them sharing a womb for a few months), the understanding they have with each other allows them to create something that stands out from the rest.
Over the last few months they’ve had success on YouTube with their ‘alternative’ cover of Abba’s Mamma Mia which has had over 14,500 hits and numerous positive comments, they’ve laid down their first two demo tracks, had both of these voted Track of the Day on music website Garageband, and have just started on their second video piece.
This is the journey they take…..and we don’t know where it will end up!

We Are All Henry’s Children
by Phil Coyne on Nov.06, 2009, under General
For the past few weeks I’ve been working closely with Henry’s Children – a band from Birmingham who are one of the best I’ve ever seen live.
Adam and Jon came in to talk about the album they self released in May and now the time has come for you to download it from their Bandcamp website.
You can find it at their Bandcamp for the princely sum of £5.
As someone who has been heavily involved with them recently, I’d love if you could take a listen and snap up a copy. Currently they’re trying to raise funds to record their second album, so every little helps.
Henry’s Children gig at the Adam and Eve
by Phil Coyne on Oct.28, 2009, under General
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working closely with Henry’s Children to get them set up to take the world by storm. What started off as an offer getting their latest EP, Woodbine Street, on to iTunes has now transformed into something a little bigger.
After sitting in on a couple of their practice sessions, I was asked to help them “work the desk” for their regular night at the Adam and Eve, Digbeth last Friday. Since the live sessions have started, I’ve found myself having a lot more interest in making sure levels are correct and it all sounds great for you lovely listeners on the interwebs.
It was a long but fantastic night on Friday. HC were supported by Richard Burke and James Summerfield, who incidentally signed to the same label as Simon Fox, who is on this weeks show. Despite a few problems with the sound (not me, I wasn’t “working it” at that point) they both came across very well.
At about 10ish, after being presented with three or four pints, it was time for the band to take to the stage and for my work to begin. Looking in on the practice sessions was great because I remembered who would be singing on which song, who needed to be a little louder etc and I could also rely on feedback from the crowd on who needed to be louder in the front of house. A fantastic night which has hopefully helped the band in the long run.
The next gig I’ll be helping out at is at Flan O’Briens on the 5th November in Walsall. Come down if you can and witness my skills in action.
The Start of Something New
by Phil Coyne on Oct.19, 2009, under General
This week I’ll be embarking on a sort of new venture. Henry’s Children have asked me to start getting involved with their online promotion and a bit of sound engineering for their regular gigs at the Adam and Eve in Digbeth. As someone who’s currently unemployed, this could be a good little outlet for my days spent at home jobseeking and generally having trouble finding something to do.
I’ve started by getting their first EP, Woodbine Street, submitted to iTunes and Spotify, so you’ll soon be able to sample it all for yourself. You can also go straight to the band and grab a CD for £5 + P&P at their website.
In what could perhaps be called a coincidence, I’ve also been asked by the lovely Suzie from The Benwahs to help out with the regular night at Gosta Green starting on the 29th October. It’s all for free at the moment, but hopefully someone, somewhere might see my talents and throw a stack of money at me. If not, I’m sure I’ll make loads of friends with bands that can then appear on The Midsweep!
Artsfest Roundup, well Athlete photos
by Phil Coyne on Sep.16, 2009, under General
This weekend was the biggest Artsfest event ever put on in Birmingham and it’s not become the biggest free arts festival in the UK. Not surprising, then that Tammy and I made a point of getting there and having a nose around. There will be a full recap on Saturday’s show, but I thought I’d share the pictures I have *so far* of the weekend, especially Sunday when we were allowed backstage.
The rest of the photos are being processed, but the set will be updated as soon as I get my virtual hands on them. Until then, enjoy some very upclose photos of Athlete
You can check out the rest of the set here
Expanding the Midsweep family
by Phil Coyne on Sep.04, 2009, under General
After last weeks hiatus due to illness, Midsweep will be back tomorrow, albeit in a pre-recorded form.
The team at Rhubarb are undergoing some training, so we’ll be putting out a pre-recorded show instead of the usual live shenanigans.
Now the Summer break for most bands is over, we’re looking for people to come in to the studio and play a few tracks. We’re also going to be stepping up the number of interviews and “outside” broadcasts we do.
As always, we could use some help. If you think you could add something to the team, either as someone behind the scenes or in front of the mic, get in touch.
Midsweep is back, with a bang?
by Phil Coyne on Aug.22, 2009, under General
That’s right, after two weeks off the airwaves Midsweep is back tomorrow morning from 10am-12pm BST with a brand spanking new phone number for you to call in to.
A 24 hour voicemail line is active on +44 0121 288 4955 which will also double as a LIVE link in to the studio every Saturday morning.
We expect messages to be left whenever you’re near a telephone as well as your input on the live shows.
So what are you waiting for? Go forth, leave messages! And remember to listen live tomorrow for a special guest.

First show in the bag!
by Phil Coyne on Jul.25, 2009, under General
I’m on my way back home after doing our very first show on Rhubarb Radio.
After some initial hiccups, I think everything went pretty well and definitely from a presenter’s viewpoint, the flow was kept with a good mix of music.
I’ll have a listen back shortly and it’s be cool if you could too and let me know what you think. I’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for future shows, so hoping you can make it extra special
by being a part of it.
Am yow ready?!

So now the preparation begins; playlist building, MP3 sourcing, band interviewing, music playing goodness.
